Call for papers for a Special Session of the 7th International Conference on Transportation and Space-time Economics (TSTE), 11-13 October 2019, Beijing, China

Title of the Special Session:
Sustainable development of shared autonomous vehicles

Organizers:
Shaopeng Zhong & Zhong Wang

Affiliation:
Dalian University of Technology

Shared autonomous vehicles (SAVs) will be part of people’s lives in the next 10-20 years. The technology is developing rapidly, but questions for academia and decision-makers about whether and how SAVs will be beneficial to the development of a sustainable society still remain. On the one hand, SAVs have been found to have potentially positive effects on improving traffic efficiency, increasing road capacity, and enhancing road safety. On the other hand, it has been pointed out that SAVs can reduce people’s marginal travel cost and thus encourage people to undertake longer drives and more trips. The increase in the overall vehicle miles travelled will trigger urban dispersion and low density urban growth in the long-term and hinder the sustainable development of cities, which is similar to the influence of motorization (mass diffusion of private cars) on urban expansion in the United States. This special session invites contributions to address research problems related to sustainable development and SAVs. It aims to help decision-makers to understand the potential effects of SAVs, recognize the negative effects of SAVs, and provide strategies to address them. The scopes and topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

(1) Short-term and long-term effects of SAVs on travel behavior and transportation system
(2) Long-term effects of SAVs on location choices and land use
(3) Long-term effects of SAVs on energy consumption, air pollution, and social equity
(4) Implications and strategies for relevant decision-makers

Submitted papers through strict review process will be recommended to and published in the Special Issue of SCI/SSCI journals.
