Special Session: High-speed rail and air transport

The rapid development of high-speed rail (HSR) around the world, especially in China, has revitalized the railway industry while posing considerable challenges as well as opportunities for air transport. HSR has competitive advantages over air transport in terms of airfare, frequency, punctuality, and accessibility. HSR can also provide a feeding service to air transport, which gives rise to new business models for the cooperation/integration between HSR and airlines/airports. The implications of HSR on air transport, on intercity travel behavior, and on regional economic growth are vital and challenging for all stakeholders: passengers, airlines, airports, HSR operator(s), and policy makers. This Special Session invites contributions to address research problems related to high-speed rail and air transport. It aims to promote knowledge exchange and scientific excellence in this intriguing field. The scopes and topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  1. Economic impact of co-developments of HSR and aviation services

  2. Impacts of HSR on air travel demand, supply and social welfare

  3. Competition and cooperation between HSR and aviation services

  4. Intercity travel behavior analysis

  5. Low-cost airlines versus HSR

  6. Agglomeration effects, externalities, and equity

  7. Implications for relevant policy-makers

Submitted papers through strict review process will be recommended to the Special Issue of Transport Policy on “High-speed Rail and Air Transport: Theoretical Analysis and Empirical Evidence” (see http://tste.bjtu.edu.cn/show-802-41.html for details of the SI).
